A lot of the asks implied that I didn’t know anything about racism or that I had not experienced any form of discrimination because i’m half white, and in their opinion I can “pass”. I just wanted to set the record straight.
YES I’VE BEEN THE VICTIM OF DISCRIMINATION/RACISM IN THE PAST. My visuals are abiguous. Every person that looks at me sees something a little bit different. Some people think i’m full white. Others think i’m full asian. Some people think that i’m hispanic, and still others just look and me and try to guess. I’ve heard everything from Puerto Rican, to Inuit, to Russian. Becuase of this, i’ve been through a lot of shit.
When I around 6, I was beaten by a full grown man because I had “dirty blood”. I’ve been called a spic, and cracker, and a chink, sometimes in the same day. I’ve had people tell their kids not to play with me. I’ve had people straight up ignore my existence. I’ve been followed in stores. I once had a Korean substitute teacher call me things I don’t care to repeat. I’ve heard tons of slurs against both of my parents. I’ve been told that I “don’t belong” in certain places/groups. I’ve been spit on. I’ve had someone tell me to my face that I don’t count as a Korean person because i’m half white. I’ve had customers at my job ask for someone that can speak english, even after talking to me for a couple minutes. (By the by, I speak english fluently, and am pretty much accentless due to my Air Force brat upringing. Just a few slight traces of Australia and Philadelphia, but nothing to lead someone to think I don’t speak english.) I’ve had family members tell me i’m not American because i’m asian. I’ve been a spectacle, and something dirty that should be hidden. I’ve been told to stop “acting asian”, completely discounting the fact that I lived in Korea till I was in elementary school, and that my friends outside of school were almost exclusively asian, and that I was raised by an asian mother. I’ve had both sides of my ethnicity and experiences denied my entire life. And everything that i’ve written is just the tip of the iceberg. I could go on for hours.
If any of you had really read my last post, you would already know the following, but after reading the asks, i’m just going to write it here again. This is the internet. Reading a few pages of someones blog does not mean you know them. So unless you really know them, only say nice/constructive things. No need to say anything nasty, or that could be taken badly, unless you have definite proof they are being an asshole themselves. I’m not a nice person. I’m actually kind of a huge jerk, but even a douche like me know that kind of thing. So all you kind strangers should be much better.
Even when I’m not overly raging, white folks will refuse to listen and continue to defend their misappropriation of our experiences.
I don’t need to know who you are to know that your username is still offensive as YOU ARE WHITE. You have no right to claim “honorary-asian” seeing as YOU AREN’T ASIAN. You will never experience what it’s like, as an Asian person, to live within the U.S. You will never have racial slurs thrown at you or your safety at risk because of racists shitheads. You will never have to deal with the exotification and fetishization Asian people face nor the desexualization. You will never experience the diaspora any Asian person lives through or the pain along with it. You will never go through any of the various struggles that Asian people bear through.
You will never experience the dehumanization Asian people experience.
While I’m fine with you being uncomfortable about people claiming “honorary” anything and if you want to claim that the Asian race has been through and goes through a lot, fine.
But you know what: white people face racism too. Just because we’re “white” doesn’t mean we’re not a race and that harsh words against us isn’t racism. In fact, the generalisation that all “white folks will refuse to listen and continue to defend their misappropriation of our experiences” in and of itself is racism.
And actually, there is just as much negativity out there toward white people as any other race. Its just that you live in America, you don’t see it. Or rather, you choose not to see it.
Here’s a fun article for you.
Racism can and is applied to all people.
So get off your damn racial high horse.
Lol, the “we have it just as bad as you do” argument. Nice touch too that I’m only “claiming” the struggles Asian folks endure.
All I really needed was a white person to tell me what racism was all about, my eyes have been opened.
Get the fuck out of here.
Let’s look at the numbers based on the article.
So there were 58 racially motivated murders between 1995 and 2004 in the UK, according to the article. 24 victims were white.
The article cited above is from around 2006. In 2001, 91% of the UK’s population is listed as white, and in 2011 about 85% was listed as white. Between 2001 and 2011, so I’ll guess that there were maybe around 45 million white people in the UK out of the maybe 51 million. All people of color, including Black English, Asian, and others (as listed by the census) probably come to about 7 million - about 13% or 14%.
So statistically speaking the likelihood of being murdered for being white in the UK is about .47 out of a million (0.000047%).
For being a person of color, it’s about 5 out of a million (0.000486).
Now I don’t know anything about the UK other than what the BBC fanatics keep streaming into my dashboard, but I’m just using the numbers listed on the UK’s census data.
And according to the data, you are over ten times more likely to be the victim of a racially motivated hate crime in the UK if you’re a person of color.
But yeah, let’s go on believing that white people are just as oppressed.
Maybe it’s because i’m half white, but I can never understand why people say that you can’t be racist against white people. Maybe somehow my pov is tainted by the whitey blood that flows through my veins. But since the general consensus on tumblr is that you can’t be racist, or discrimnate against white people… I guess i’ll have to degree. So from now on, if a person of color is treats a white person badly because of the color of their skin, I will no longer view them as racist. I’ll just view them as a huge douchey piece of shit.
TREAT EVERYONE NICELY. IS IT THAT HARD.
Also, to the orignal poster… Shit. You don’t know her life story. Maybe shes a white girl adopted or fostered by asian parents. Maybe she has an adopted younger sister who is asian. Maybe her sister married an asian guy and she is really close with her inlaws and they nicknamed her that. Maybe she’s a white girl that was born and raised in somewhere in Asia. You just don’t know. Fucking hell. This is the internet. You are just a reader on some random persons blog. You don’t know them, and you don’t know their life story. Maybe she has a legimate reason for making that her screenname. Maybe it’s just some kind of inside joke she has with her friends. My point is… you don’t know why she has the screenname. So why comment on it?
Where to start… where to start…
Racism against white people does not exist because power dynamics. It does not exist against white people when they’ve systematically given themselves power and advantage at the expense of Indigenous and/or People of Color. Look at the history in which white people have conquered, enslaved, raped, and killed Indigenous and/or People of Color to attain power and how they’ve actively and deliberately maintained that power through a variety of cruel measures.
Maybe you should’ve actually looked into it more before speaking. This is hardly the general consensus across all of tumblr and if you thought so, you should’ve looked into why people were saying it doesn’t exist against white people. Shut the fuck up with this “kumbaya” shit when that does nothing for those being oppressed, it is only allowing oppressors to remain comfortable in their position.
No matter the situation, she is still WHITE and therefore herself, will never experience the various struggles any Asian person would experience.
Shut the entire fuck up.
Are you kidding? There are blogs upon blogs upon blogs on the subject. It might not be the consensus in the real world, but on tumblr… yeah. The theory that you can’t be racist against white people is living and strong. They took it out of the curriculum now, but when my brother was a freshman in college, they had a talk in his freshman seminar about how only white people can be racist. It’s not some unknown, and unpopular thing. It’s not prevalent in the real world, but it’s definitely known. And i’m heavily versed in the subject. I minored in Asian studies, and for my major I had to take a shitload of classes on all kinds of discrimination, be it based on race, gender, or sexual orientation.
And call it what you will. Racism or whatever other word you want to use. If you are being mean, or treating someone badly because of the color of their skin. You are a bad person. It does matter if it’s white>black, hispanic>asian, asian>native american, or any other combination of ethnicity. It’s not a good thing. You can take away the world racism. I don’t need it. You can say that it’s not racism all you want. But no matter what you want to call it, it’s not a good thing.
As for white people attaining power through discriminating against others actively… it’s true. But it’s not like they are the only ones who have done it. It’s just that the world is currently under their control. If you look at history, people have been doing it for ages. I’m Korean, and we were treated like shit, and torn down by other countries for ages. If you open a history book, you can see tons of accounts of one ethnic group treating another ethnic group like shit to get more power. The people in charge of the world are usually unscrupulous, selfish people. because they are the ones who are willing to do whatever it take to get to a position of power. And the ones who are under control of those people are usually stupid like cows, and only care about their own comfort, and will believe for the sake of that comfort, that “others” are “bad”.
We live in a society where racism is permeated through every breath we take. It’s subliminally entered into our minds through the things we see on tv, and the stories we hear from out friends. It’s part of the very core of American culture itself, and it’s a terrible thing. But at what point does a retaliation against that stop being a positive thing, and start being something negative.
I went off on a long tangent that is fairly off topic, but my basic point is just this, if you don’t know someone. And you don’t know their reasons for doing something. You find out why they are doing it before criticizing. That’s it. If it’s something that deserves criticism, then criticism is due.. But you should know before doing it. Attacking the outcome, without looking at the source will just lead to wounds on both sides. Racism will never be gone. It will always, always be there, because people suck. BUT!! We can lessen it, and the effects of it by talking to each other calmly and rationally. Attacking others will only lead to more division, not less.
There are tons of scholarships available simply for being black. White people have to work harder for scholarships.
Find me one scholarship that people can get “simply for being Black” and I’ll pay…
Can I just say.. “fuck all of you, i’m asian”? White/Black people complaining about school related racism…. rotflcopter. Worrying about scholarships? Before we even get to that point, asians have to do better then a white/black/whatever kid to get the same spot. Top colleges limit the amount of asians they let in to promote “diversity”.
I’ve pretty much gotten so sick of the racism on tumblr. Black people being racist to white people. Asians being racist towards Hispanic people, Whites being racist to… everyone? If there is a kind of racism, you will find it on tumblr. And i’m fucking tired of it. We are all internet nerds~~ Can’t we just get along and not hate eachother. I mean, I go through enough racism in my daily life (Being ching chonged at work, then being told by “friends” that since i’m half white my asian side doesn’t count) to want to go through this shit on the place I come to relax.
I have probably more stories then anyone I know about racism. I was discriminated against in Korea for being half white, I’ve been discriminated in the US for being asian. Hell i’ve even been discriminated against for being hispanic… and i’m not even hispanic. When I was a kid in Korea, I was actually physically beaten by some drunken middle aged man because I had “dirty blood”. When I was in middle school my “friends” made me sit on the floor next to the table because they didn’t want to eat at the same table with a chink. I’ve been told I had a strong Korean accent, or that people “can’t understand that ching chong shit” despite the fact that i’ve lived in the US for around 17 of my 23 years. So I know a little something about racism. And with my knowledge, I can see there is a shitton of it on tumblr. And a suprising amount of it comes from blogs that claim they want to overcome racism. Yup. Uh-huh. You want to overcome racism… by making fun of white people. Yup. I see the equality blossoming already.
If you want to educate white people of their privilege that’s fine. It’s actually good. If you want to get up on your box and shout to the world, or merely calmly research and disperse your gained knowledge thats fine as well. But if you try and do it by mocking others… you’re just another racist shitbag.
And by people, I mean a lot of the dumb fucks that run blogs like “thisisnotkorea” ”thisisnotjapan” etc. Honestly a lot of the blogs that claim to fight racism, are actually racist as fuck. I was reading thisisnotkorea, and I thought it was a joke blog, but as I kept reading… that fucker is serious. And when I started on thisisnotjapan… roflcopter. Being a POC does have disadvantages. There are times when white people need to be told to “check their privelge”. But that doesn’t mean that being mean to white people is ok. And if you do think it’s ok… that doesn’t make you a crusader for asian rights. It just makes you a douche.
This is kind of contradictory because I am using foul language, and the overall tone of this post is harsh, but haven’t these people ever heard that you draw more flies with honey then vinegar? If someone does something that you consider as a mistake, or racist, but does not seem to be purposefully antagonizing, then correct them kindly. If they are doing it to make you feel bad, then you can open the can of whoopass. But if not, then you are just being a jackass.
Also, white people jokes = not ok on a blog about getting rid of racism. If you are normal blog, go ahead. I makes jokes about whites, asians, hispanics, arabs, everyone but black people… i’m scared of them…. There is a time and a place for everything, and if you want people to take you seriously, then that kind of thing isn’t really fitting. It just makes the whole tone of the blog less serious. And not in a “this is a blog against racism, but its still fun and funny~” way, but in a “this blog is a joke” way.
This post isn’t solely pointed at the two blogs I named in the beginning, but rather at them, and the multitude of blogs like them. Sorry if I came off the the “blog police” telling people how to run their blogs as well, but I just really felt the need to say it.
Also, so people don’t think i’m a butthurt white boy, i’ll write a little bio: Half Korean half American (it’s all mixed up. Mostly white, but i’ve heard I do have a few black ancestors. My family has been here on my dads side since colonial times.” Most people think i’m some kind of hispanic. I was raised in the Korean community, and actually lived in Korea till I was 5 or so. I also minored in asian studies, and until recently majored in Human Services with the intent to work helping recent immigrants. So yea… no butthurt white boy here.
You can be any race, or gender/sex. You can be a part of any religion or community. You can come from any spot in the globe. I will treat you how you act around me, and that means I may offend you. I don’t think I should have to walk on egg shells around someone just because they’re black, Christian, gay, or from Iran. If something I say offends you, get over it.
I will be as racist, sexist, or whatever you call it all I want. It’s not like I’m saying “I hate X” or “I think that Ys are horrible and should die”. Most of the time, I’m just cracking jokes about how my male friends need to get back into the garage and fix my car.
If we can say it about ourselves, others should be allowed to say it about us. And vise versa.
oh but you’re wrong
making racist and sexist remarks is the exact same thing as saying “i hate x.” you’re saying “i don’t care about your history of oppression/persecution/genocide at the hands of people like me.” you’re saying “i don’t care that i benefit immensely from the way that people like me set up the world to work in my favor, even though it’s on other people’s backs.” it’s more than just remarks offending people.
I just want to say. I’m half asian. I’ve been cursed at, spit on, and physically hit. In second grade I had to change teachers, because the teachers discrimination was bad enough the school felt they had to intervene. I’ve had parents of friends tell me that i’m not allowed to play with their children. I’ve heard “ching chong” more times then I can count, then had asian friends make fun of me for being white. I’ve been denied service in resturants. I’ve been told I have to pick one race, or that “you can’t be half korean. you are either a korean or your not.” Basically if there is a form of discrimination… i’ve felt it.
And do you know what i’ve learned about discrimination? Mocking it is the best way to make it into nothing. If someone tries to make me feel bad about my race(s), i’ll just say. “Yup! I am a chinky ass cracker~” And I also make jokes about other peoples races. Not to harm them, or make them feel bad, but just to make it seem like it’s not a big deal. Like it or not, ethnicity is a big part of almost everyones lives.
Also, honestly… even more then the people who tried outright to insult me, I usually felt more insulted by the people that were overly accepting. It just makes me feel pathetic, and there is usually a distinct lack of sincerity. I would much rather have someone call me a dirty mixed blood, then try to make me feel “special”.
Finally, I dislike the idea of “politcal correctness” it just bothers me to have to watch my words in case it might offend someone. If it’s someone I care about, then I might worry about it. But if it’s just some stranger on the street/internet IDGAF~ My question is… why are you so concerned about what a complete stranger has to say? You could learn from it, or think it’s annoying, but only an idiot would let it personally offend them. There are huge amounts of people that will really hate you for whatever reason (skin color, religion, ethnicity, etc) but you are worried about people who are just joking around?
Finally, not to be too much of a creeper, but I went to the person I reblogged this froms? (Is froms a word? Do I need an apostrophe?) blog, and found out they are named Kaidy, and they are from Canada. So i’m guess a white girl. What does a white woman have to say about this race related topic anyway. She just needs to get her privileged cracker ass back to the kitchen, so she can make me a sandwich.
